Leader P4

To present a state-of-the-art on the pre-selected lagoon systems, their geological, geomorphological context, the current legislative framework relevant to lagoon management and the factors responsible for their pollution.
Milestones:
Critical review of available literature and socio-economic data (month 4)

P1 Inventory of anthropogenic activities Inventory of anthropogenic pollution activities
P1 Socio-economic context study Socio-economic analysis

Work Package 2
Data Collection
Leader P6

Physical and chemical data are collected from each lagoon system in order to:
- characterize the morphodynamic and hydrogeological processes in each lagoon;
- build up the sedimentary facies and the sedimentary geometry;
- determine the pollutant elements distribution in space and time;
- establish the impact of pollutants and their distribution in microorganisms.
Milestones:
Technical meetings for planning (month 1) and review (month 3) of the sampling methodology. Review of intermediate results from each sampling campaign at Coordination meetings (months 6, 12, 18 and 24)

P4,P3 Sampling of soils, sediments and water
P4,P3 Analyses of water Present state water contamination map
P5 Mineralogical and geochemical analyses of soils and sediments Data base of analytical results including georeferenced points
Inventory of bioavailability and toxic grade of potentially pollutant elements
Geochemical 3D map of pollutant distribution in sediments and soils
P3 Ostracodes and foraminifera collection and study Data base of analytical results including georeferenced points
P3 Sedimentological analyses Sediment type and sedimentary facies distribution
P2 Satellite image interpretation Morphodynamic map

Work Package 3
Ecosystem Functioning
Leaders P3 & P5

The objective is to determine the areas that are likely to be morphologically and/or chemically modified through the analysis of the factors which influence the hydro-dynamical processes and the pollutants distribution. Evolution scenarios are then developed taking into consideration seasonal variations.
Milestone:
Validity tests of the different scenarios following the 4th sampling period (month 24)

P3 Present morphodynamic scenario Ocean-color data for the management of lagoons
Report on the possible morphodynamic evolutions for both lagoons
P5 Present bioavailability and toxicity
P3,P5 Contamination/ morphodynamics assessment Report on possible geochemical evolution scenarios for both lagoons

Work Package 4
Diagnosis
Leader P1

The intermediate objectives are to:
- Build the LCA of the fishery (in Morocco) and of the waste water purification station (in Tunisia)
- Assess the contribution of these developments to the overall level of pollution present in both lagoons
- Identify the processes and/or stages that could be improved to reduce pollution for both developments.
Milestones:
Partner meetings with end-users for LCA (months 12, 18) and LCA validity verification after feedback (month 29)

P1 Life Cycle Inventory Report on LC Inventory
P1 Life Cycle Impact Assessment Report on LCA

Work Package 5
Lagoon Management
Leader P2

Using all outputs from the previous workpackages, the aim is to develop:
- Data processing tool which couples the LCA data with the GIS database in order to take into account spatial differentation
- Technical cards for the LCA's of the fishery and the waste water purification station showing how pollution can be reduced through improved processes and/or stages
- Guidelines to achieve sustainable development
Milestones:
Meetings with enterprises and public authorities for feedback and impact measurement (months 24 and 34)

P2 Elaboration of computer decision making tool A data processing tool for the local public authority
P2 Elaboration of technical cards Technical cards for the responsible of the fishery farm, the waste water station and the public authority concerned with these developments
P2 Elaboration of guidelines Guidelines for public authority
P7,P8 Impact measurement; feed back test Validation report on guidelines, technical cards and decision making tool
