Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM)

Several of our projects dealt with the special characteristics and hence specific requirements when dealing with karst water resources.

Specific examples of projects sponsored by the European Commission include our active involvement in the development of a Computerized methodology for aquifer vulnerability mapping (1994-1997) , with partners in Italy, France and Tunisia.  IRMCo also participated in the project Vulnerability and risk mapping for the protection of carbonate (karst) aquifers , taking a lead-role in the elaboration of guidelines dealing with Hazards and Hazard Mapping (1997-2002).

Assessing the vulnerability of the water resources found on the Island of Gozo formed part of the ResManMed (1997-2000) research project and required the development of a methodology which took into consideration the general absence of detailed information on soil thickness and on the groundwater levels (piezometry) of the aquifers found in Gozo.   The resulting 'Surficial Cover Infiltration' map takes into consideration the surface lithology, lineaments, karst features and drainage density.  Click here for more details on the ResManMed project .
